Once upon a time, back in 2018…
My best friend and I, who were also roommates, had just landed our first job after college. We decided to shift into a studio apartment on the 4th floor of a building in a Christian society in Gurgaon. We found the flat through a broker, and surprisingly, it was very affordable despite having all the necessary amenities.
Whatever the apartment lacked initially…like a washing machine, fridge, and cupboards; we simply requested our landlord, and he arranged everything for us. At first, it felt like the perfect setup.
But after a few months, strange things began happening.
During Diwali, I went home to celebrate with my family, and shortly after, my roommate also left for her hometown. When I returned, I noticed that all the lights and fans in the flat were switched on. I thought she had forgotten to turn them off, but when I asked her, she was equally surprised. She told me she had personally switched everything off before leaving.
After that incident, it became a pattern. Every day when we came back from work, we would find all the lights and fans turned on, even though we had made sure to switch everything off before leaving. It made us wonder if someone was entering the flat in our absence.
Things got creepier. At night, we often heard multiple knocks on our door, which scared us to the core. One evening, we were watching a show on my phone when I noticed a shadowy reflection moving from the kitchen to the washroom. I told her immediately, and we both froze in fear.
We also began noticing that even when we locked the doors ourselves before heading to the office, they would sometimes be open when we got back. It felt like someone…or something…was inside with us.
Eventually, we shared everything with someone who claimed to have experience with such things. After listening to our story, she advised us to leave the flat immediately, warning us that something was definitely wrong.
It was a tough decision. We were still in our first job, had limited savings, and had deposited a significant security amount with the landlord. When we approached him and explained everything, he casually told us, “If you’re so scared, just read the Hanuman Chalisa.”
We knew we had to get out. So, we asked our friends for help. They spoke to the landlord on our behalf, and after a lot of convincing, he finally agreed to return a portion of our security deposit.
We didn’t wait a day longer. We packed up and moved out immediately, grateful to be safe..and away from that place.
